It's Okay to Not Know Where to Start

The Bible is not one book. It's sixty-six books, written over roughly 1,500 years, by dozens of authors, in three languages, across multiple continents. It contains history, poetry, law, prophecy, letters, philosophy, genealogies, apocalyptic visions, and love songs. It has 1,189 chapters and over 31,000 verses. If picking it up for the first time feels overwhelming, that's because it is. You're not dumb for being confused. The Bible is genuinely complex.

And yet, billions of people across human history — including people with no formal education, people in prison, people who couldn't even read and had to hear it spoken aloud — have found it to be the most important book they've ever encountered. Not because they understood all of it. Nobody understands all of it. But because somewhere in those pages, they heard something that sounded like truth, like home, like the voice of someone who knew them.

The mistake most beginners make is treating the Bible like a novel and trying to read it front to back. Genesis starts strong — creation, gardens, floods, epic stories. But by the time you hit Leviticus (book three), you're knee-deep in ancient purity laws and regulations about skin diseases, and most people quietly close the book and never come back. That's not a failure of faith. It's a failure of strategy.

You need a different approach. Not a lesser one — a wiser one. The Bible wasn't designed to be read cover to cover in order. It was designed to be lived with. Explored. Returned to. You read a piece, you sit with it, you come back. Over time, the pieces connect. But you don't need the whole picture to start. You just need a door.

Don't Start at Genesis (Seriously — Here's Why)

I know this sounds counterintuitive. Genesis is the first book. It's where it all begins. And the first few chapters are genuinely beautiful — creation, the garden, the fall, the first murder, the flood. But Genesis quickly becomes a story about a specific family (Abraham's descendants), and if you don't already have context for why that family matters, it can feel like reading someone else's diary.

Then comes Exodus — exciting in parts (the plagues, the Red Sea), but the second half is detailed instructions for building a tabernacle. Then Leviticus, which is almost entirely legal code. Then Numbers, which is — well, it's numbers. Lots of census data. By this point, most first-time readers have given up, and they feel guilty about it, and the Bible sits on the nightstand gathering dust for another year.

The Bible wasn't arranged in the order you should read it. It was arranged by literary category (roughly: law, history, poetry, prophecy in the Old Testament; gospels, history, letters, prophecy in the New). The reading order should be determined by what will help you understand the central message most quickly, not by what page comes first.

For a first-time reader, I almost always recommend starting in the New Testament. Specifically, the Gospel of Mark or the Gospel of John. Mark is short, fast-paced, and action-oriented — it reads like a breathless eyewitness account. John is more reflective, more theological, more concerned with the meaning behind the events. Either one will introduce you to the person at the center of the whole book: Jesus.

Once you've read one of the Gospels, you have context. Now the Old Testament starts to make more sense — it's the backstory. The law, the prophets, the poems, the history — they're all building toward the person you just met. And the letters that follow the Gospels (Romans, Corinthians, Ephesians, etc.) are people processing what it means that He came. The Bible becomes a conversation when you know the central character. Without that, it's a confusing library. With it, it's a unified story.

Five Entry Points: Where to Begin Based on What You Need

Different people come to the Bible with different needs, and the best starting place depends on what you're looking for. Here are five entry points, tailored to what might have brought you here.

If you want to know who Jesus is: Start with the Gospel of Mark. It's sixteen chapters. You can read it in about ninety minutes. It was likely the first Gospel written, and it moves fast — the word "immediately" appears constantly. By the end, you'll have a clear picture of what Jesus said, what He did, and why it matters. After Mark, read John for a deeper, more contemplative portrait.

If you're going through something hard: Start with the Psalms. You don't need to read all 150 — start with Psalm 23 (comfort), Psalm 46 (strength), Psalm 13 (honest pain), Psalm 139 (being known by God), and Psalm 121 (help from God). The Psalms give you permission to bring your whole self to God — anger, fear, grief, gratitude, joy. They're the emotional core of the Bible.

If you want practical wisdom: Start with Proverbs and James. Proverbs is a collection of short, pithy wisdom sayings that cover everything from money to relationships to work to speech. James is a short New Testament letter that reads like a practical manual for living out your faith. Together, they're the most actionable books in the Bible.

If you're curious about the big story: Read Genesis 1-12 (creation to Abraham), then skip to Exodus 1-20 (slavery to the Ten Commandments), then read the Gospel of Luke (the most complete narrative of Jesus' life), then read Acts (what happened after Jesus). This gives you the spine of the biblical narrative — creation, fall, exodus, Jesus, church — in a manageable amount of reading.

If you just want to start somewhere beautiful: Read the Sermon on the Mount — Matthew chapters 5 through 7. It's the longest single teaching of Jesus in the Bible, and it's stunning. The Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, turning the other cheek, not worrying about tomorrow — it's all here. If you read nothing else in the Bible, read these three chapters. They'll change the way you see the world.

How to Read a Single Chapter Slowly

The biggest mistake first-time Bible readers make is reading too fast. Not because speed-reading is sinful, but because the Bible wasn't designed for speed. It was designed for depth. A single chapter — sometimes a single verse — can contain enough meaning to sustain weeks of reflection. The goal isn't to finish. The goal is to be changed by what you read.

Here's a simple method for reading a single chapter slowly, adapted from ancient Christian practice. It takes about twenty minutes, and it works for any passage.

First reading: Just read it. Read the entire chapter once, at a normal pace, without stopping to analyze. Let it wash over you. Don't worry about what you don't understand. Just take in the overall shape and feel of the passage.

Second reading: Read it again, slower. This time, read it line by line. When a word or phrase catches your attention — when something strikes you as beautiful, confusing, comforting, or challenging — stop. Mark it. Don't force meaning onto it. Just notice what's drawing you in.

Sit with what struck you. Take the word, phrase, or verse that caught your attention and stay with it. Ask yourself: Why did this stand out? What is it touching in my life right now? Is there something here I needed to hear today? You're not doing academic analysis. You're listening. You're letting the text read you as much as you're reading it.

Respond. Write a sentence or two in response — to God, in a journal, or even just in your mind. This might be a prayer, a question, a confession, or a simple "I don't understand this, but I'm going to sit with it." The response completes the circuit. You've received something; now you're offering something back.

This method — read, reread, sit, respond — is the basic rhythm of thoughtful Bible reading. It doesn't require a seminary degree. It doesn't require any prior knowledge. It just requires willingness to slow down and pay attention. That's harder than it sounds in a world optimized for distraction. But it's also more rewarding than you might expect.

What to Do When You Don't Understand Something

You will encounter things in the Bible that confuse you, disturb you, or seem to contradict other things you've read. This is normal. It happens to scholars who've spent their entire lives studying the text. It is not a sign that you're doing it wrong or that the Bible is broken. It's a sign that you're reading a genuinely ancient, genuinely complex collection of writings, and you're taking it seriously.

Here's what to do when you hit a wall.

First, don't panic. You don't need to resolve every confusion immediately. Some questions take years to sort out. Some may never be fully resolved this side of eternity. That's okay. Faith isn't the absence of questions — it's the willingness to keep seeking in the presence of them.

Second, check the context. Many confusing Bible passages make more sense when you read the surrounding chapters. A verse ripped from its context can mean almost anything. Read the paragraph before it and after it. Consider who's speaking, who they're speaking to, and what situation they're in. A single verse from the mouth of Job's friends, for example, might be recorded as something that was said but not something the Bible endorses — that distinction matters enormously.

Third, use a study Bible or a trusted guide. A good study Bible includes introductions to each book (who wrote it, when, why, to whom) and footnotes explaining difficult passages. These are not cheating. They're essential tools. The Bible was originally read in community, with teachers and elders explaining the text. A study Bible gives you some of that communal wisdom.

Fourth, hold your confusion with open hands. Not every question needs an answer today. Write down what confuses you. Come back to it. Let it simmer. Sometimes understanding arrives six months later, when you read another passage that suddenly illuminates the one that confused you. The Bible is deeply interconnected, and meaning often accumulates slowly, across many readings.

Fifth, talk to someone. Find a person whose faith you respect and ask them your hard questions. Not someone who will give you pat answers, but someone who will say, "That's a great question. Here's what I've found helpful, but I don't have it all figured out either." The Bible was meant to be read in relationship with other people. Your confusion is an invitation into conversation.

A 7-Day First Bible Reading Plan

If you're ready to start but you want a structured on-ramp, here's a seven-day plan. Each day's reading takes ten to fifteen minutes. Don't rush it. Use the slow-reading method from above if you can.

Day 1: John 1 — The Gospel of John opens with one of the most beautiful passages in all of literature. It introduces Jesus not just as a historical figure but as the Word who was with God from the beginning. This chapter sets the stage for everything that follows. Read it like poetry, because it is.

Day 2: Psalm 23 — The most famous chapter in the Bible, and for good reason. Six verses about a shepherd and his sheep. It's about provision, protection, presence, and peace. If you read nothing else this week, read this.

Day 3: Matthew 5 — The beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes — "Blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn" — will challenge everything you thought about what God values. This is Jesus at His most radical and most compassionate.

Day 4: Genesis 1-2 — Now go back to the beginning. The creation account. Read it not as a science textbook but as a poem about order emerging from chaos, about a God who creates and then calls it good. Notice how everything has a place, how humanity is made in God's image, how the week ends with rest.

Day 5: Psalm 139 — A psalm about being fully known by God. "You have searched me, LORD, and You know me." This psalm covers everything — God's knowledge of you before you were born, God's presence in the darkest moments, God's care in forming you. Read it slowly and personally.

Day 6: Romans 8 — Many scholars consider this the greatest single chapter in the Bible. It moves from "no condemnation" to "nothing can separate us from the love of God." It covers the Spirit, suffering, hope, and God's unbreakable love. It's dense. You won't catch everything on the first read. That's fine. Let it overwhelm you a little.

Day 7: John 15 — Jesus uses the image of a vine and branches to describe His relationship with His people. It's intimate and organic — about staying connected, about bearing fruit, about being loved. A beautiful place to end your first week and to ask yourself: do I want to keep going?

If you finish this week and want more, you're ready to read the entire Gospel of John. Take it a chapter a day. Don't rush. Let it become a habit — not a duty, but a rhythm. Like morning coffee, but for your soul.

From Reading to Praying: Lectio Divina for Beginners

There's an ancient practice — dating back to at least the sixth century — called lectio divina, which is Latin for "divine reading." It's a way of reading the Bible that transforms reading into prayer. If the slow-reading method I described earlier is the basic model, lectio divina is the full practice. And it's simpler than it sounds.

There are four movements. You can do all four in fifteen to twenty minutes.

Lectio (Read): Choose a short passage — ten to fifteen verses is plenty. Read it slowly, out loud if possible. Listen to the words as you read them. Something will catch your attention — a word, a phrase, an image. That's the Spirit highlighting something for you. Don't force it. Just notice what stands out.

Meditatio (Reflect): Take the word or phrase that caught your attention and sit with it. Repeat it gently. Turn it over in your mind like a stone in your hand. Ask: why this? What is God saying to me through this? How does this connect to my life right now? This isn't academic analysis — it's a heart-level conversation between you and the text.

Oratio (Respond): Let the reflection become a prayer. Whatever the passage stirred in you — gratitude, longing, conviction, comfort, confusion — bring it to God. This is where reading becomes relationship. You're not just studying a text; you're talking to the Author.

Contemplatio (Rest): Let go of words. Let go of thinking. Just sit in God's presence. This is the part that feels most foreign to modern people, because we're addicted to doing. Contemplation is about being. Just being with God. You might feel nothing. You might feel peace. Either way, you're practicing the most fundamental posture of faith: receiving.

Lectio divina doesn't require expertise. It doesn't require a quiet house or a beautiful chapel (though those help). It requires fifteen minutes and a willingness to show up. Monks have been doing this for 1,500 years, and it works for the same reason it's always worked: the Bible is not a dead text. It's alive. And when you read it slowly, prayerfully, with an open heart — it reads you back.

God, I'm about to open Your book. I don't know much about it. Some of it confuses me, some of it scares me a little, and I'm not sure I'll understand what I read. But I'm here. And I'm told that You meet people in these pages.

Open my eyes to see something true. Open my heart to receive something good. Give me patience with the parts I don't understand and humility to admit what I don't know. Protect me from reading carelessly and from reading fearfully. Help me read with the kind of attention that changes a person.

I don't need to finish the whole thing today. I don't need to become a scholar by Friday. I just need to start. So I'm starting. Help me.
