The short answer

The Bible values love deeply, but it also calls you to guard your heart and walk in wisdom. Scripture does not ask you to stay in relationships that are harmful — it gives you permission to set boundaries and pursue peace.

What Scripture Says

"Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life."

Proverbs 4:23

"He who walks with the wise will become wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm."

Proverbs 13:20

"They will hold to an outward form of godliness but deny its power. Turn away from such as these!"

2 Timothy 3:5

"If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."

Romans 12:18

"If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town."

Matthew 10:14

Going Deeper

Loving someone does not mean tolerating abuse, manipulation, or destruction. Scripture calls you to live at peace "as far as it depends on you" — which recognizes that sometimes the other person makes peace impossible. Guarding your heart is not selfishness; it is stewardship. God cares about your well-being, and walking away from a toxic situation can be an act of wisdom and faith.
