What Does the Bible Say About Depression?
The Bible does not shy away from depression. Many of God's most faithful people — David, Elijah, Jeremiah — wrestled with deep despair, and God met every one of them with tenderness, not judgment.
What Scripture Says
"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."
Psalm 34:18"Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God."
Psalm 42:11"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."
Psalm 147:3"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
