The short answer

A prayer for comfort after loss simply asks God to be near and to hold you in the emptiness. He is the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, and He meets you in the deepest valley of grief.

What Scripture Says

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,"

2 Corinthians 1:3

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."

Psalm 23:4

"As a mother comforts her son, so I will comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem."

Isaiah 66:13

"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

Psalm 34:18

Going Deeper

After loss, comfort does not mean the pain goes away — it means you are not alone in it. God compares His comfort to that of a mother holding her child. In the valley of the shadow of death, His presence is the staff you lean on. A prayer for comfort is not asking God to make the grief disappear, but to walk through it with you, step by step.
